A while ago I posted about Jennifer Connelly and how I find her intriguing and glorious, and I recently remembered that - hey! Cillian Murphy is, too. My love for intense dark-haired people with light eyes lives on. (If you know me, you know I have a bit of a preconceived 'ehh' with blondes.) Many think he's creepy, but maybe/definitely that's part of the appeal.

The red beard!

His demeanor in many interviews isn't particularly appealing, but I just attribute that to his apparent discomfort with the celebrity circuit (or so says Wikipedia...). That was when I realized that I know nothing about what makes a tasteful tie, not only in regards to fabric but also the width, etc. I know what kind of tie I would probably wear as a guy - skinny, minimal - but my dad is not an emo rocker or tweed blazer-wearing indie guy (though, hey, neither am I). I must admit, though, I went through a huge Interpol phase in 7th grade and may or may not have worn ties now and then...notable outfit - black tie, white button down, gray blazer, lame hair, black skirt, slip on Vans. Those were the days x_x Anyway, I tried calling Ed & Mack for some tie advice, to no avail. I called my mom to ask what kind of ties my dad wears, and she sent me a couple of pictures. Still couldn't find something...

I recently revisited project make-dad-a-tie and found some tie silk + lining at Mood. I looked at these different tutorials and patterns and took something from each.

→ Puking Pastilles - I used the pattern from here. The idea of a "rather thick tie with a nice fat knot" turned me off, so I didn't line the whole thing. I also reduced the width.
→ The Purl Bee - I slip-stitched on the lining pieces as in this tutorial.
→ How to make a custom made bespoke tie - I considered this probably the "real" way to make a tie. Next time maybe I'll try a wool interlining. I loosely followed the keeper instructions here.

I gifted this to my dad yesterday, and he said he'll wear it this week! As it turns out, my dad, since moving to Jakarta, has been opting to wear formal batik shirts to work instead of the ol' suit and tie! My mom says he stills wears ties sometimes, though I think she's just being nice, haha. Pictures later hopefully.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7405854070608121154.post-32251673019266453672011-07-26T07:17:00.000-07:002011-07-26T08:39:08.976-07:00Batik Class, Jakarta

So today was my second day in Jakarta visiting my parents! I'll be here for a little over a month. We'll be going to Singapore, and when my sister and her boyfriend join us, we're all going to Bali and other parts of Indonesia. This week we're taking it easy.

Today my mom and I visited the Musim Tekstil in Jakarta, which showcased some amazing batik. Batik is the traditional fabric of Indonesia, decorated using wax and dye. Different motifs and colors hold different social implications/regional significance. Unfortunately, there were no captions detailing any of the pieces (I would have liked to know more about the different methods used), and some areas were terribly lit. We whizzed through the main section of the museum in a mere ten minutes, the second in probably fifteen-twenty. My mom said it's funny how so much money is put into shopping malls but not the museums. Cool experience either way.

The museum offers batik classes, which we, of course, hopped on. The class cost less than $10 for the two of us combined! Amazing.

The workshop was this nice naturally lit, sort of open air room. We first chose our motifs from a pile of probably forty. I had feared having to BS my own batik design, you know, just because I wanted to focus more on understanding the method. We then traced the design with pencil onto a white cotton square. The pencil lines disappear by the end of the whole process.

We put our squares into embroidery hoops and sat down to trace back over our lines with a tjanting, a wooden handled tool with a tiny metal cup with a tiny spout, out of which the wax seeps. My mom and I both spilled a few drops of wax on the fabric. I also spilled wax from the tjanting onto my hand twice (I'm not talking a few drops), and dude...it kind of killed. The girl helping us/our instructor gave me what I am guessing was some aloe vera gel. Spilling must not be uncommon.

We traced our designs with the wax on both the front and back (something I found annoying because it's hard to tell what parts you have and have not gone over on the back). Batik is a wax resist dyeing technique, which means all parts not covered with wax get dyed.

Shit is tedious!

Tjantings.

Our instructor painted wax around the edges of our squares. After it dried, she cracked the wax with her hands. You'll see why later, though I'm sure you can guess.

We didn't have to get our hands dirty with dyeing. Not that the first part wasn't messy enough. It didn't take long for the dye to take.

My mom's piece. Our instructor suggested we write our names on the side. Easier said than done, my friend.

Haha, see the drips? Anyway, I thought the cracked wax came out awesome!

So it turns out that batik is a headache-inducing craft that demands patience and fine attention to detail (both of which I apparently lack), but if you take your time, you can come up with something quite beautiful (which I didn't). Not sure if I'll be filling up a tjanting with hot wax any time soon, but this experience has opened my mind to wax resist dyeing techniques... The wax-cracking thing seems manageable.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7405854070608121154.post-3611937216438810022011-07-24T12:47:00.001-07:002011-07-24T13:26:17.956-07:00Hello Dolly
Lately I've been enjoying baking things for people. I love this blueberry crumb bars recipe from Smitten Kitchen and have made a couple times now. They're super easy to make, and any fruit can be substituted. Also made some chocolate chip peanut butter cookies for my screen printing class with a version of this recipe. So good...I need better descriptors.

Looking for new baking recipes, I knew I wanted to make something that wasn't quite a cookie, maybe a bar, maybe contained no fruit, maybe some nuts... I stumbled upon Hello Dolly bars, or seven layer bars, which are apparently a sort of old classic that many people grew up with. (?? - not sure, first I'd heard of them) You can use whatever you like with these...almonds, walnuts, or pecans. Many people use a combination of chocolate chips and butterscotch or white chocolate chips. I used coconut, pecans, and white chocolate chips. The base is crumbled graham crackers, and sweetened condensed milk is poured over the top to keep everything together. Next time I'll pour the milk over each layer to bind them together a bit better and also layer some of the chocolate chips on the top. Many reviewers said these were way too rich and sweet, but I actually think they were just right.

These guys are now in transit.

P.S. New bamboo cutting board from the 99-cent store for $4.99. Fingers crossed it doesn't fall apart in a month. The pastry brush I got from there was practically disposable; the bristles came out completely after one use.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7405854070608121154.post-64594869847307274932011-07-24T12:14:00.000-07:002011-07-24T13:21:45.123-07:00Dinner with Mack & Ami

Mismatched mix of bowls/plates and forks/spoon. Paper napkins, water bottles instead of cups (where did my cups go?). Knowingly unrefined but definitely delicious/necessary condiments.

Garlic knots! Or garlic blobs? I was impatient and didn't do a great job of tying the dough into knots, but you know...who's counting. (these look kind of horrible! haha)

Rigatoni with a combination of sweet and spicy Italian sausage (because Mack can't handle the heat) and wilted arugula in tomato sauce. Yum...I will be making this again. (Weekly, even?)

Ami!

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7405854070608121154.post-6313252820351887702011-07-01T17:39:00.000-07:002011-07-01T18:17:13.934-07:00Date with Myself: Jamie Oliver's Spaghetti + Meatballs Recipe
I've been watching Jamie Oliver's Oliver's Twist and decided to try out his recipe for meatballs tonight (featured in season 1 episode 4).

Not hungry yet? Alright, I give up. (I like how I write as though I have an audience.)

All in all, I'd give the meatballs a four out of five. Quite good! A bit too much rosemary for my liking. They also weren't quite salty enough for my taste, which was probably due to my underestimation of what a "good pinch of salt" is. Otherwise, the tomato sauce was 'spot on', and who can fuck up spaghetti, really. I will definitely make this again with some tweaks.

Good thing I liked this, since I'll be eating it for the next hundred days trying to eat it all.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7405854070608121154.post-19920853501715432462011-06-28T22:12:00.000-07:002011-06-28T22:27:22.878-07:00Spinach Artichoke Dip + Pesto Pasta
Here's what I made for dinner last night!

Ingredients for spinach artichoke dip...

...served with pita chips and pesto fusilli with sun-dried tomatoes.

Credit for dish washing goes to Mack of course.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7405854070608121154.post-81869026519921220172011-06-28T21:20:00.000-07:002011-06-28T23:45:42.225-07:00Thread Print

We turned in our first batch of projects this evening. I turned in a t-shirt, tank top, two pillows, and a tote bag I sewed earlier today. Tonight we practiced using opaque inks on dark grounds. I played around with this thread since I had a needle on hand, sewing it back and forth through this piece of vellum. I was going for an irregular stripe kind of look.

Kind of fun! And just how wrinkly the fabric is.

I spent most of the class sewing the vellum/burning it into the screen. Next class, I plan to play around with this print more. Maybe criss-cross the design? We'll see! Not sure exactly what I'll do with these prints.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7405854070608121154.post-40770540753065639472011-06-27T20:45:00.000-07:002011-06-27T21:53:40.005-07:00Screenshot SaturdaysOkay, so maybe it's not Saturday (MAYBE), but now is as good a time as ever to post little tidbits I've saved that put a smile on my face. Pictures later.

In class last night, we experimented with this amazing marbelization technique. (Pictures another time, also) I, however, was itching to burn and print this artwork, created by my sister, Kia. This piece has been on my mind since I first saw it. Poetic diagrams...I eat this shit up.

Here it is printed on vellum, ready for burning:

I was able to squeeze in just a couple of test prints before class ended.

As you can see, the prints are patchy in areas. I'm itching to know all the details because for the semester, we are only able to print in the classroom/studio space, which is not available for use outside of class time.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7405854070608121154.post-13626574517559442102011-06-17T01:41:00.000-07:002011-06-17T13:55:51.193-07:00Web Developer Toolbar by Chris Pederick

Since I finally have the time to devote to working on my personal website/a side-blog project, I've been trying to brush up on my HTML/CSS skills. I've been watching AdobeTV and YouTube tutorials like it's my job, and I've become a lot more comfortable with (basic) coding... I understand the structure more thoroughly, and uploading a site using FTP is no longer (too) a shit show! Yes, yes, this is child's play. I know...

One of the tools I've discovered that has improved my understanding of CSS is the Web Developer Toolbar by Chris Pederick. The toolbar offers a variety of features, though my favorite is the Edit CSS feature, which allows the user to alter the CSS of any page and see 'live' results. Being able to display all the details of a page (see above screenshot) also has helped me familiarize myself with proper site structure, identifying elements, etc. I know there must be a lot else a more experienced person could get out of this toolbar. Download it and see for yourself.

Click here for more information + to download the toolbar

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7405854070608121154.post-33084051224229244572011-06-16T21:08:00.000-07:002011-06-17T12:37:34.989-07:00Jules Mordovets by Marcus Ohlsson for Velvet June 2011Jules Mordovets photographed in “Avventura Nel Deserto” by Marcus Ohlsson and styled by Laura Bianchi for Velvet June 2011.

I love this editorial so much I (greedily) don't want to share it at all, yet at the same time, I want to post every single photo. Since this is an experimental course, we explore creating our positive with a variety of things. Yarn, leaves, feathers, paper, and basically anything that's flat and opaque can be taped to acetate or vellum to create the graphic. Cool, right? This also includes simply using an opaque marker to draw.

I initially planned to use Photoshop or Illustrator to achieve a certain quality (I wasn't feeling the organic thing for once), but got too frustrated and gave up. See above this adorable pug picture. I just loved the positive/negative quality of the black and white pug! (It's not my photo, though, so I felt weird using it.) I couldn't get right on the computer with live tracing, etc. I attempted to trace it but didn't know what approach to take.

My fallback plan had been to play around with thread/string, though when I dug around my craft boxes, I also found these black felt letters that I once used to decorate a tote bag. (Remember these? haha, why would you)

So this is what I came up with...disclaimer: it's a beginner course, not a class full of artists, and this was our first project so...yeah it's not super cool, I know.

We printed last night and were encouraged to play around with overprinting image over image, which I actually really liked (see below) The screens we were using are for fabric, rather than paper, but to get the hang of printing, we printed on paper, with the option to print onto t-shirts later (I decided to wait until next class).

We had to choose at least three lighter/bright colors (of course plain black would have been my first pick). My screen started to dry out, so a couple of print weren't too crisp. I also wasn't super careful about paint getting on the bottom of the screen, so blah blah blah disclaimer disclaimer!

I think it's best that I didn't end up doing something via computer. Why not experiment?

Lots of fun! My Japanese course getting cancelled, allowing me to take this course instead, was maybe a blessing in disguise.

(All photos courtesy of my iPhone)

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7405854070608121154.post-7449900439306123782011-06-02T20:42:00.000-07:002011-06-16T21:58:10.331-07:00lab

I'm itching to take some more photos of the screenprinting lab but don't want to be too obnoxious...so this will do for now.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7405854070608121154.post-56665489049466358902011-06-02T20:38:00.000-07:002011-06-16T21:58:22.445-07:00a good morning

Ami, tea, and Infinite PossibilitiesUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7405854070608121154.post-64296630130217525732011-06-02T20:11:00.000-07:002011-06-16T21:59:12.622-07:00glory

chipotle's been crushing it these days!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7405854070608121154.post-5176183536587239082011-06-02T20:05:00.001-07:002011-06-16T21:59:17.021-07:00sd101

I started my experimental screenprinting course this week! This little sucker floated down and actually tickled my nose, waking me on the morning of my birthday!! Can you believe it??

Well, not quite. It did float down and somehow end up under my desk a couple of days ago, though.
